Album Letter to a Friend (2023)
Produced by French Paradox and under the sponsorship of the FACE (French American Cultural Exchange, the French Embassy in the US), Letter to a Friend is Raphael Pannier's second album as a leader, released on November 10th 2023.
The idea is the creation of innovative music of international scope, collaborating with two music giants current, of diametrically opposed styles.
On the one hand, a jazz giant: the saxophonist Miguel Zenón. Awarded the Mac Arthur Medal, the Guggenheim Prize winner, nominated 12 times for Grammy Awards, former musical director of San Francisco Jazz Collective, composer of fifteen albums as leader of his quartet; Zenón brings a sense of melody, a strong musical interaction during risky improvisations, and a unrivaled virtuosity to the project.
On the other side: another giant, the producer of electro music from Berlin: Martin Gretschmann, called Acid Pauli. Former companion of the singer Björk (he notably composes on her album Vespertine in 2001), obligatory guest of biggest electro festivals on the planet (Cercle, Burning Man, etc.), creator of the legendary club Rote Sonne in Munich, he is a reference world for modular sounds and the “down tempo” style .
The album is recorded in June 2022 at the Bunker Studio in New York by John Davis, in quartet with François Moutin on double bass and Giorgi Mikadze on piano. The band records on sounds and tracks pre-designed by Acid Pauli, made from Raphael's compositions, and result of three years of exchange between the two of them. On top of these sounds and tracks, are created truly open solos and musical interaction, like a classic jazz quartet, using a system of loops. For the ears of these seasoned jazzmen, the inspiration is therefore completely new. Afterwards, in post-production, Acid Pauli created new sounds, added effects, and re-designed his tracks, based on what happened in the studio... It's a real dialogue between humans and machines.
The theme of this album is the setting in music of a text, a letter, signed by painter Fra Angelico da Fiesole... in the 15th century! This letter is a call to listen, to open on the world. It constitutes a message of rare power and of a disconcerting universality. This letter constitutes ten stanzas. Each of the stanzas is set music symbolically by a pieces: ten stanzas gave birth to the ten pieces of this album. The first track is the reading of that poem, made by the American poet Harold Green III.
Letter to a Friend is an album of a new genre, mixing worlds and colors unexplored until now. The artistic around this project is of rare depth. The virtuosity, both instrumental and in terms of production, is at its highest possible level of music current.

De l’autre côté : un autre géant, le producteur de musique électro berlinois Martin Gretschmann, appelé Acid Pauli. Ancien compagnon de la chanteuse Björk (il compose notamment sur son album Vespertine en 2001), invité obligatoire des plus grands festivals électro de la planète (Cercle, Burning Man, etc..), créateur du club mythique Rote Sonne à Munich, il est une référence mondiale pour les sons modulaires et le style “down tempo”.
L’album est enregistré en Juin 2022 à New-York, au Bunker Studio, par John Davis, en quartet avec François Moutin à la contrebasse et Giorgi Mikadze au piano. Le quartet enregistre sur les sons et pistes pré-conçus par Acid Pauli à partir des compositions de Raphaël, résultat de trois ans de recherches et d'échanges ensemble. Sur ces sons, de véritables solos ouverts sont créés par un système de boucle. Le quartet peut alors improviser et interagir tel un quartet de jazz classique. Pour les oreilles de ces jazzmans aguerris, l’inspiration est donc toute nouvelle. En aval de l'enregistrement, Acid Pauli retravaille ses sons, ajoute des effets aux instruments, et utilise l'aspect humain des enregistrements studio. C'est un véritable dialogue entre humains et machines.
Le thème de l’album est la mise en musique d’un texte, une lettre puissante et profonde, signée du peintre Fra Angelico da Fiesole... au XVeme siècle! Cette lettre est un appel à l’écoute, à l’ouverture sur le monde. Elle constitue un message d’une puissance rare et d’une universalité déconcertante. Cette lettre constitue dix strophes. Chacune des strophes est mise en musique symboliquement par un des morceaux : dix strophes ont
fait naître les dix morceaux de cet album. La première piste de l'album est la lecture du texte, faite par le poète américain Harold Green III.
Letter to a Friend est un album d’un genre nouveau, mêlant des mondes et des couleurs inexplorées jusqu’ici. Le travail artistique autour de ce projet est d’une profondeur rare. La virtuosité, instrumentale et de production, est au plus haut niveau possible de la musique actuelle.
